A fine album of 136 cartes-de-visite and eight cabinet cards (one of each loosely inserted), inserted in pre-cut window mounts with gilt borders, ink manuscript numbers under each opening, sitters and occasionally photographers identified in pencil on mounts in a later hand, re-lined, green lacquer boards simulating malachite, the front cover with two applied gilt metal straps, back cover with four small gilt metal bosses, gilt metal clasp (new morocco spine), g.e., lge. 4to. A compilation of portraits of leading artists, many in several different poses or by different photographers, the majority British (many members of the Royal Academy) but including French, Belgian, Italian, German, Swedish and American sitters. Subjects include Sir Edwin Landseer, Clarkson Stanfield, Gustave Doré, William Powell Frith, Sir Frederick Leighton, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Henry Hunt, John Gibson, Hiram Powers, William Story, Vasili Vereshchagin, Sir Charles Eastlake, Rosa Bonheur, Gustave Courbet, Franz Winterhalter, Sir John Tenniel, William Holman Hunt, David Roberts and many others.
