Lot Essay

A symbolist painter, Khnopff used photographs as study references for his painting. He also had photographs of some of his works made by Albert-Edouard Alexandre who made platinum prints which Khnopff retouched in pastel and crayon. These prints were signed by the artist and sold as fine-art prints.

French-born, Albert-Edouard Alexandre was a photographer and dealer working in Brussels from 1897, producing collotypes and platinum prints. He was also a renowned pictorialist and was one of the two Belgian members of the Linked Ring.
