Lot Essay

The gentleman is the brother of Mary Warner.

German born, Khn was first introduced to photography at the age of thirteen. Following an education in botany and medicine, he became completely involved with photography and settled in Vienna with his wife and family. He worked as a portrait photographer with Hugo Henneberg and Hans Watzek and later the three experimented with the gum process. In 1896 they founded Das Kleeblatt (the Clover Leaf) and Khn became leader of the Viennese school as well being appointed a member of the Linked Ring. A year later he introduced multiple gum printing with various pigments and from 1923-35 he worked as a commerical photographer.
