American born, Deborah Turbeville studied photography through seminars with Richard Avedon and Marvin Israel. She worked as fashion editor for Harper's Bazaar in New York from 1962-65 and from 1972 she was working as a fashion photographer for Vogue and Marie-Claire in Paris and New York. Through her careful choice of untraditional models and locations and by using muted tones and high grain, Turbeville created a special mood, different from that of more traditional fashion photographs.
