Lot Essay

The Swiss photographer Emil Schulthess studied photography under Hans Finsler and is known for his colour photographs of the United States, Antarctica, the Amazon, China and Russia, in particular his photography of the sun and its paths. In acknowledgement of his work in the Antarctic, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names has called the point 84 47'S Latitude, 115 00'W Longitude "Schulthess-Buttress".
