A mid 19th Century vernier octant
Constructed in ebony and brass by D.McGregor & Co Glasgow & Grenock, the inset ivory scale divided 2½°--0°--110°, the vernier 20°--0° with clamp and tangent screws; five shades, two mirrors, double pin hole sight in fitted mahogany case with brass securing hooks and a presentation plaque screwed to lid: Presented by Robert Chrystal Esq to Quintin Carsell late in the Clyde Training Ship Cumberland on receiving a certificate of competency as a Second Mate H.M.S. 'Cumberland' 5th July 1878; the radius -- 8in. (20cm.)
