Lot Essay

H.M.S. Temeraire, 8,540 tons, was the first barbette battleship designed for the Royal Navy and was coincidentally the largest brig ever built. Launched in 1876 and completed the next year, she spent most of her active service in the Mediterranean until placed in reserve in 1891 and finally broken up in 1921.
