Lot Essay

(C.f. introductory text to lot 344).
The paddle packet Salamander was built for the General Post Office to run on their fast Dover to Calais mail service in 1832. Registered at 114 tons, she measured 100 feet in length and was fitted with Maudslay engines to give her a speed of 11 knots. Subsequently taken over by the Admiralty in 1837 when they assumed responsibility for the mail packets, she was renamed Beaver but continued on the same cross-channel route.
