Lot Essay

Gallia, 4,809 tons, was built for the Cunard Line by J. & G. Thomson of Glasgow in 1878. Completed in the spring of 1879, she initially ran from Liverpool to New York until changing onto the Liverpool to Boston route in 1886. She remained on this service, apart from a brief charter in 1896, until 1897 when she was sold to the Beaver Line for their Canadian run. Resold in 1899 to the Allan Line for their Montreal service, she stranded on her first voyage and, despite being salvaged, was scrapped in 1900.

City of New York II, 2,642 tons, was built for the Inman Line by Tod & McGregor of Glasgow in 1865. Entering service that June, she ran from Liverpool to New York until 1876 when she was briefly chartered by the American Line for their Liverpool to Philadelphia run. Re-engined in 1877, she was then chartered by the Guion Line but soon returned to Inman who kept her until the end of 1882. Sold to the Allan Line in 1883 and renamed Norwegian, she thereafter ran on several North Atlantic routes until eventually scrapped in 1903.
