Lot Essay

The iron four-masted full-rigger Primrose Hill was built for William Price of Liverpool by Royden's in 1886. An enormously heavily rigged vessel, she was registered at 2,436 tons and measured 301½ feet in length with a 42 foot beam. Short-lived like several of her sisters, Primrose Hill was driven ashore near Holyhead and wrecked in a tremendous gale on 27th December 1900 whilst en passage from Liverpool to Vancouver; all aboard her, including Mrs. Wilson (the master's wife) and twelve apprentice boys were lost. A graphic account of the wreck is included with the lot.
