The original sphynx, labelled 'Tuthmosis', was designed by George John Vulliamy, architect to the London Metropolitan Board of Works, to accompany the Egyptian granite obelisk, known as 'Cleopatra's Needle', when it was erected on the Thames Embankment in 1880.
