Lot Essay

The present bust is based on Antonio Canova's sculpture of Napoleon as Premier Consul (1802-3). The laurel crown is a later addition. See Fred Licht Canova, Abbeville Press, New York 1983, pp.99-101. Comparable examples sold in these rooms, 27 April 1994, lot 288, and 24 April 1996, lot 85.
