CHARLOTTE BRONTË (1816-55)
Original wash sketch reputedly by Charlotte Brontë, signed ("sincerely yours C Brontë"), portraying the head and shoulders of a man with caption "Pride", on tracing paper, 120 x 125mm. (4¾ x 5in.) (spotted, edges frayed, corner torn with loss to word).
Provenance
The drawing was given to Arthur E. Clementson in 1904 with accompanying note: "With Mrs Duckworth's best wishes for 1905. Hillands, Dec 27, 1904". Also present is a letter sent to Arthur Clementson in 1924 from Clement Shorter of The Sphere, 6 Great New St., London, E.C.4: "In reply to your letter I am hardly able to express an opnion on the drawing that you send me to look at. All the drawings that I have in my possession by Emily Brontë bear her signature, but it is quite possible that the drawing you refer to is by Charlotte Brontë. It bears her handwriting on the side. Emily Brontë always signed herself E. J. Brontë. Moreover this is certainly Charlotte's handwriting."
