BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY, OF ALAMEIN (1887-1976)
Three autograph letters signed ("Montgomery of Alamein") to Mr. Smith, together 3 pages, 8° and 4°, Isington Mill, Alton, Hampshire, 17 March to 5 August 1964.
The first thanking him for his letter of March 14. "There has obviously been a slip-up this end - not a practical joke, and not a hoax. Your letter of December was torn up, when answered. I have been away in Africa for over two months. Your suggested visit was utterly forgotten." The second arranging a date for Mr. Smith to visit with some of his Scout Group. The third stating that the visit is postponed: "because I will be with Sir Winston Churchill at Chartwell that weekend ... Will you suggest some dates, from which I can select one; but keep it entirely secret from the Press and radio."
Each letter with hole-punches to left-hand margin. (3)
