SORTE, Christoforo. Osservationi nella pittura al Magnif. et Eccell. Dottore et Cavaliere il Sig. Bartolomeo Vitali. Venice: Girolamo Zenaro, 1580.
Small 4°. Woodcut armorial on title. Three large woodcut intials. (Light staining to outer margin, final 2 leaves cut short at lower margin.) 18th-century half calf and yellow boards, rose-patterned endpapers. Provenance: Girolamo Caratti of Udine (ownership inscription on front free endpaper next to accession no. or shelf mark) and occasional marginalia in the owner's hand.
FIRST EDITION. The blank spaces at the end of leaves 15 and 16 are explained by Cicognara as having been intended for illustrations to Vitali's letters to Sorte on the antiquities of Verona, which were included in the second edition of 1594 but withdrawn from publication in the first. Sorte also brought out Modo d'irrigare la campagna di Verona, 1593, and was evidently consulted by rich Venetians for his knowledge of both art and hydraulics. BL STC Italian p. 634; Cicognara 212 "rarissimo opuscoletto".
