[VARCHI, Benedetto]. Orazione funebre sopra la morte del reverendissimo Cardinal Bembo. Florence: per il Doni, 1546.
8° in 4's. Large woodcut title device. (Lower margins neatly restored, some marginal soiling.) Recent marbled boards backed in crimson morocco, spine lettered and dated in gilt. Provenance: Piero Ginori Conti (bookplate).
Despite writing a history of Venice, his native city, Pietro Bembo (1470-1547) had a particular attachment to Florence, cultivating the Tuscan form of speech in preference to the Venetian dialect. The edition of Petrarch's Italian poems, published by Aldus in 1501, and the Terze rime which Aldus issued in 1502, were both edited by Bembo who was appointed secretary to Leo X, and made cardinal in 1539 by Pope Paul III. Gamba 1008 "Molto rara".
