[RINUCCINI, Ottavio]. Descrizione delle feste fatte nelle reali nozze de' serenissimi principi di Toscana d. Cosimo de' Medici, e Maria Maddalena archiduchessa d'Austria. Florence: Giunti, 1608.
4°. Medici-Hapsburg arms on title, woodcut ornamental initials, 5 folding engraved plates, by Matthaeus Greuter and B. Coccius. (Small marginal worming repaired in final leaves, some light spotting and a few slits at folds of plates, a few folds neatly repaired on verso, the first plate just shaved at top edge.) Modern red half morocco, title lettered in gilt along spine. Provenance: Vincentio Aulla (title inscription); Piero Ginori Conti (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of Rinuccini's description of the elaborate festivities staged to celebrate the marriage of Cosimo de' Medici with Maria Maddalena of Austria. The marriage, arranged through the influence of Philip III of Spain, was a Medici diplomatic master-stroke and was thus celebrated with enormous pomp and splendour. The bride, accompanied by her brother Maximilian and a large entourage, entered Florence on 18 October 1608 to a welcome of fireworks and a procession through triumphal arches designed by Lorenzo Franceschini. Events over the following days included a nuptial banquet in the Palazzo Vecchio, a football match in the Piazza Santa Croce, and a ball in the Palazzo Pitti. The present copy is a variant of Camerini I Giunti 318, with Tipo I title as a single leaf, followed by A-Dd4 E2 F-N4 and 5 engraved plates.
