8°. Contemporary Italian blue half roan, gilt spine (original yellow wrappers removed).

FIRST EDITION. With Pinocchio, this is the most famous Italian children's book; it has been translated into more than two dozen languages, in 1895 appearing in English as Heart and again in 1899 as Enrico's Schooldays. De Amicis wrote this wonderfully sentimental juvenile novel in order to encourage a sense of national unity in the elementary schools, with chapter titles such as Il conte Cavour, Re Umberto, Garibaldi and Italia. The most notorious literary rarity of the Risorgimento.
