4°. Engraved portrait. 2 engraved headpieces and 2 engraved opening initials. (Title lacking but supplied in manuscript.) Finely-bound in crimson morocco gilt, sides with an all-over-pattern of flower heads and dots within single gilt rule, spine in 7 compartments, olive morocco lettering-piece in one, the remainder with repeated floral ornament (spine torn at head, some rubbing of joints and corners), green silk liners, g.e. Provenance: "A present from the author" (inscription to front blank).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY. Count Francesco Algarotti (1712-64) enjoyed the patronage of Frederick the Great, who made him a count of Prussia, and the friendship of Voltaire who called him "cher cygne de Padoue". His great work, Newtonianismo per le dame, 1737, was written in Paris. His chief work on art is the Saggi sopra le belle arti, 1760. Michelessi, his biographer, published a complete edition of his work, 1791-94. Brunet VI, 30758.
