8°. Giunta device to title and verso of final leaf. With blank Q7. Initial spaces. Later 18th-century green mottled boards.

Born at Florence about 1405, Matteo Palmieri was a public official eventually appointed to the supreme office of Gonfaloniere di Giustizia. He died in 1475. Among his other prose works were a general chronicle from the creation of the world to his time, a life of Niccolò Acciaioli, the book De captivitate Pisarum, the annals of the Florentines (1432-74), and a history of the translation of the body of St. Barbara. According to Grolier, this is the FIRST EDITION of the Libra della Vita Civile, which was written in 1435; Parenti, however, states that the first edition appeared without date or imprint. Adams P118; BL STC Italian p. 486; Grolier Exhibition of Italian Books 85; Parenti p. 383.
