PITTONI, Battista. Imagini favolose. Venice: Francesco Ziletti, 1585.

2° (278 x 210mm). Engraved title incorporating Ziletti's star device and 20 double-page plates engraved by Pittoni, on guards, letterpress address to the reader with woodcut headpiece and ornamental initial. (Title trimmed to image and tipped on, one small marginal repair.) Modern half-vellum. Provenance: ink stamp washed from verso of first plate; Gustav Tassoni (bookplate).

Known for his etchings of maps and landscapes featuring classical ruins, Pittoni had engraved the plates for Scamozzi's Discorsi spora l'antichità di Roma, printed by Ziletti for the publisher Girolamo Porro in 1582. As Ziletti outlines in his introduction here, Porro again put Pittoni's work in his hands for the Imagini favolose. The etchings represent classical ruins in various landscape settings; Ziletti entitles the work Teatro della humana vita. Not in Berlin Kat., Cicognara, or Brunet.
