NAPLES -- A suite of 26 engravings most by Antoine Cardon after Giuseppe Bracci (? of 30 published), titled in manuscript "Le Vedute di Napoli". [(?) Naples, 1760's].

Oblong 4° (190 x 340mm). Several plates on blue paper, numbered 1-30. (But lacking nos. 7, 8, 17 and 18 in the sequence and bound in reverse order without title or text, a few plates browned.) Modern half vellum, preserving contemporary limp patterned wrappers. Provenance: Ownership inscriptions of "M: Keene" and "Benjamin Keene Feby. 13th 1839" to free endpaper and inside front wrapper.

Antoine-Alexandre-Joseph Cardon was born in Brussels in 1739 and died there in 1822. He worked in Rome before coming to Naples, and while there he also worked on the Etruscan Antiquities of Alexander Hamilton. Plate 20 in this series is dedicated to "Mr. Changuion. Chargé des affaires de S. M. Britannique a Naples an. 1764", while plate 22 shows an eruption of Vesuvius dated 1755. Benezit records that Cardon left Naples in 1769.
