Full-page woodcut of a triumphal arch, woodcut Imperial arms on title signed with monogram AC, printer's device on KKk6v and final verso, historiated and ornamental initials, some woodcut Hebrew type. (Browning and spotting, a few expurgated passages washed with resultant weaknesses, a few headlines shaved, some small stains.) Old flexible vellum, title written along spine (lacks two ties). Provenance: a few early annotations; Fr. Thomas Maluenda (signed on final verso, presumably as censor).
The Catalan Calvete de Estrella accompanied Don Phelippe, son of Charles V, as valet on an embassy from Spain to the Netherlands. Writing in the style of the great chronicles, he relates their travels from their embarkation at Valladolid on 11 December 1548, through Italy, Austria and Germany, the eastern border of France, Belgium and the Netherlands before arriving at Maastricht on 22 June 1552. Amony the Italian towns he describes are Genoa, Pavia, Milan, Cremona, Mantua, Bolzano; the Austrian and German towns include Innsbruck, Munich, Augsburg, Ulm, and Heidelberg; and in the Low Countries Brussels, Ghent, Bruges, Utrecht, Antwerp, and Amsterdam.
