FIRST OCTAVO EDITION; a quarto edition was issued the same year. Sir Andrew Balfour (1630-1694), founder of the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, practised as a physician successively in London and St. Andrews as well as Edinburgh itself. Pine-Coffin notes that "Balfour spent fifteen years on the continent studying medicine and botany. These letters, containing general travelling instructions, were written about 1668 to Lord Patrick Murray of Levistone, and were published by the author's son." Pine-Coffin 6681; Wing B553.
