Contemporary green straight-grained morocco by Clarke and Bedford, gilt panels and spine compartments (joints rubbed, vol. I repaired a foot of spine), gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e.
FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY. The Devonshire artist, author and scientist William Brockedon (1787-1854) first made an excursion to the Alps in 1824 in order to investigate the route of Hannibal. This led to the idea of publishing "Illustrations of the Passes," and during the summers of 1825, 1826, 1828 and 1829 he crossed the Alps 58 times, passing in and out of Italy by more than 40 different routes. The work was issued in twelve parts between 1827 and 1829 forming the 2 volumes. Lowndes I, p. 279; Pine-Coffin 82811. (2)
