Lot Essay

Sold with a letter to Mrs. Wrightson, [of Cusworth Hall] at 22 Upper Brook St. from Richard M. Milnes [later Lord Houghton] from 26 Pall Mall "..Mrs Meynell has suggested that you would perhaps help me about a dress to this Queen's Ball. The Period required is 1740 to 1750: I wore ... at Brighton on three good nights but the coat in all of them is rounded off, while the date requires it should come down almost square. Do you remember whether you have any of that shape & time? anything handsome takes so much making that I should be glad to find one to wear, but a hundred years is a long time for old clothes to be kept....Mrs Meynell also mentions that Miss Pierre has some good robes. Do you think they are likely to be old enough..?"

Mr. and Mrs. Wrighton lived at 22 Upper Brook St. from 1842 until at least his death in 1875.
