Lot Essay
Josef Berger exhibited in the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition what was called "A highly creditable collection" of long shawls and square Kashmir shalws worked with gold thread.
Nourtier, a Parisian shawl manufacturer, also used metal thread during this period, exhibiting such examples in 1845. After 1851-2, he signed his shawl with an "N".
Duché also exhibited similar shawls in 1849 and 1851.
However, stylistically from the date of the shawl, the most likely manufacturer's would seem to be Berger or Nourtier.
