AN EXTRAORDINARY ART DECO JADEITE AND DIAMOND SAUTOIR

Designed as a long chain of translucent, pale green jadeite half pebbles set witin diamond borders, separated by circular openwork rings, set to the front and sides with small diamonds, supporting a rectangular plaque, designed as a diamond encrusted dragon set against a background of rose diamonds, within a diamond frame enhanced by calibre cut jade to the edges, circa 1930

the variety of jewellery styles which fall under the category "art deco" is seldom acknowledged. For example, jewellery of oriental inspiration followed, among others, Turkish, Indian, Chinese and even Balinese origins. The sautoir offered shows an unusual melange of then fashionable currents, the use of jadeite and the dragon motif showing Far Eastern leanings, while the basic form the heavy chain and medallion almost suggests a renaissance model
