THE WIZARD OF OZ, 1939
An original script for the M.G.M. motion picture. Dated 7/5/38, the script contains one hundred and twenty-seven yellow typed pages bound by blue front and back covers. Includes a cast list on page A-1 and foreward on page B-1 "...For close on forty years this story has given faithful service to the Young in Heart.....and to the Young in Heart.....we dedicate this picture."; a director's note explains "...credit titles must have both dignity and importance, and at the same time be novel and interesting. This will be devised later."; on the front cover is typed "THE WIZARD OF OZ" and in the lower right-hand corner From: Florence Ryerson, Edgar Allan Woolf 7/5/38 and handwritten Mr. Woolf - file copy; cover is stamped DO NOT MAKE CHANGES, TEMPORARY INCOMPLETE and "FILE COPY."
One of the most extravagant motion pictures ever made, The Wizard of Oz went through a number of script changes before it went into production. Thirteen screenwriters either contributed or were assigned to adapting L. Frank Baum's novel into a final screenplay. Among the distinguished group of writers were Herman Mankiewicz, Ogden Nash, Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson and Edgar Allan Woolf, the latter two were brought in to work on the script the first week of June, 1938. The team remained on the picture for two months and during that time revised many characters and rewrote much of the dialogue.
