Lot Essay

Also known as I Dewa Gedé Meregeg or Meregig, this artist, a cousin of Anak Gdé Soberat, started painting early in the 1930s as a pupil of Walter Spies with possibly some instruction of Rudolf Bonnet.
Anak Agung Gdé Meregeg was an early member of the Balinese Artist Association "Pita Maha" which was established in January 1936.
In his famous article "Beeldende Kunst in Bali" in the journal "Djawa", vol. XVI, 1936, Bonnet mentions that Walter Spies had commissioned both Meregeg and Soberat to paint a wooden panel. It may well be that this is the panel so commissioned.
The artist who is still alive, has participated in many exhibitions and his name is mentioned in almost every significant book or article on the subject of Pre-War Balinese Modernists.
Painting on panel being unusual in Bali in the 1930s gives this piece all the more art historical importance.
