ENCIRCLED XUANDE SIX-CHARACTER MARKS, TRANSITIONAL, CIRCA 1650
Each painted to the central medallion with a horse surrounded by four flower-heads on a spiralled wave-ground, the well and reserve similarly decorated, painted in bright cobalt-blue tones (rim frits)

Lot Essay

Dishes of the same design but in various sizes have been recorded. Compare with two dishes illustrated by Sheaf, 'The Hatcher Junk: A Shipwreck Porcelain Cargo of the 1640s', Bulletin of the Oriental Ceramic Soceity of Hong Kong, no. 7, 1984-86, fig. 5.
