A ruler receiving a holy man,
gouache heightened with gold on paper, portrayed in an oval with yellow-ground floral border, the two men sit with an attendant behind while their two grooms wait with horses below, black and white border, red leaf, mounted, framed and glazed, Mandi, circa 1780-90 - 24.2 x 17.8cm.

Lot Essay

Twenty pages of this manuscript, including the present lot, were sold at Sotheby's, 27 March 1973, lots 167-186. The ruler portrayed is probably the patron who commissioned the manuscript and strongly resembles Raja Surma Sen of Mandi (1781-88).
