Lot Essay

Paulding Farnham designed these candlesticks as part of a grand silver-gilt dinner service designed in the Italian Renaissance style for the Paris Exposition of 1900. A matching candelabrum from the service was sold in these Rooms, June 4, 1988, lot 14. Like the present set of candlesticks, it was apparently retailed shortly after the Buffalo Exposition of 1901, as it was engraved with a monogram by Tiffany's in 1902. This candelabrum and the massive centerpiece from the service are illustrated in Janet Zapata, The Rediscovery of Paulding Farnham, Tiffany's Designer Extraordinaire, pp. 724-725, plates VIII and IX. Farnham was Art Director of Tiffany's and head of both the Jewelry and Silver Departments. He designed all of the silver and jewelry exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1900.
