The arrangement of a storage cupboard over a chest of drawers in this manner is typical of Shaker production of the Hancock-New Lebanon area. A similar built-in cupboard from Hancock Shaker Village, Pittsfield, Massachusetts and attributed to Grove Wright (1789-1861) is illustrated in Timothy D. Rieman and Jean M. Burks, The Complete Book of Shaker Furniture (New York, 1993), p.174, fig.101. Another pine cupboard from Hancock, Massachusetts closely resembling this example was sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc., New York City, November 13, 1981, lot 168.
