Each with a molded shield-shaped back enclosing three molded and bellflower-carved ribs over wavy-molded stiles, the first, above an over-upholstered trapezoidal seat with serpentine front, the second, on molded tapering legs with spade feet, the other with flaring molded legs

Lot Essay

These chairs are closely related to a pair of side chairs that were part of the original furnishings of the Morris Jumel Mansion. Owned by Mrs. J. Amory Haskell, these chairs were exhibited in the Girl Scout Catalogue (Loan Exhibition of Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Century Furniture and Glass, American Art Galleries (New York, 1929), no.697).
