The design source for this chair is illustrated in George Hepplewhite's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide (London, 1794), plate 4g. The shield back employed on this chair was frequently used by both New York and Rhode Island cabinetmakers. These chairs, with ash secondary woods and finely carved shields, are thought to be Rhode Island. For related chairs see Sack, American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection (Washington, 1983), vol.7, p. 2061, Sack, Opportunities in American Antiques (New York, 1989), brochure number forty-four, p. 95 and also The John Brown House Loan Exhibition of Rhode Island Furniture (Providence, 1965), pp. 18-19, fig. 17.
