Lot Essay

Gerald Loder was an MP from Brighton around the turn of the century. He was the donor of the Loder Cup (cf. Noel & Clark p.483) and his father owned the court at Whittlebury. Among the more interesting entries (marked by blotters) are the first match ever played at Whittlebury against his brother on Dec 31, 1881, and in Jan 1888 when he played the world champion T. Pettitt in Boston, received 30 and left hand, but still lost 5-6, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6.
