Lot Essay

Francis and John Booker were celebrated Dublin carvers and frame-makers of the mid-eighteenth century. The flower festooned columns supported by brackets which support a flute-enriched cornice surmounted by a vase and scolled pediments appear on a mirror attributed to the Bookers (see G. Child, 'World Mirrors', Bristol, 1990, fig. 164a).

In Thomas Chippendale's 'The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director', 1763, pl CLXXIa, are patterns for a pier-glass surmounted by a head-glass with boys perched on scrolled pediments.
