Lot Essay

In 1766, after an unsuccessful apprenticeship in York, Nicholson was sent by his father to a painter in Scarborough where he spent three years. The artist returned to the area in the 1780's when he lived in Whitby, and found that in Scarborough there was a good market for his work during the holiday season.
