Lot Essay

Built between 1610 and 1613, the design of the new college buildings followed the same lines as fifteenth and sixteenth century Oxford colleges. A gate-house tower in the centre of the street front leading into an enclosed quadrangle behind, the use of mullioned windows and an oriel window beneath an embattled parapet all reflect the traditional architectural pattern of colleges. Perhaps the only concession to new taste is the fact that it is built as a three storey building instead of two.
