Irish novelist, travel diarist and playwright, Sydney, lady Morgan (nee Owenson) was born in Dublin in about 1776. One of the two daughters of the actor Robert Owenson, she was brought up in the ambience of the theatre. She married a surgeon, Sir Thomas Charles Morgan and they divided their time between London and Dublin with long intervals in France and Italy that resulted in their travel writings. In 1839 she and her husband settled permamently in London.
