Provenance
By family repute, 'Dasher' Auld whose club side in the United States was Providence F.C., had originally emigrated there as a miner but came back to these shores, it is believed, in the 1920s. He is believed to have been met at Liverpool Docks by a number of clubs, including Preston North End who were keen to sign him but he said that he wanted to return to Scotland and play for his local side Stevenston United. This he did but in due course he decided to return to the United States to become a professional footballer and he settled in the North Carolina area.

Lot Essay

The above medal was presented to Andrew 'Dasher' Auld and is believed to have been awarded to him as a losing semi-finalist with the United States team when they were defeated by Argentina 6-1 in the match played at the Centenary Stadium, Montevideo on 26th July 1930 before 80,000 spectators. The United States qualified for the semi-final after winning both of their Group 4 games against Paraguay and Belgium with a total of six goals for and zero goals against. The United States team was almost a 'Scottish XI' with other Scots such as Gallacher and McGhee in their line-up. After their excellent results in the qualifying group, the United States were, rather surprisingly, installed as favourites to win the first World Cup but the Argentina side used some 'rough-house' tactics in the first-half with the United States centre-half Raphael Tracy breaking his leg after ten minutes and their goalkeeper Jim Douglas left a near cripple. 'Dasher' Auld also suffered in the first-half and he was left nursing a severe mouth injury after being kicked in the face. The United States managed to go in at half-time just the one goal down, but the Argentina team produced some devastating football in the second-half and ended the match 6-1 winners.
