PHILIP'S CHALLENGE GLOBE, London Geographical Institute, George Philip & Son Ltd. 32 Fleet Street
A 12-inch (30.3cm.) diameter terrestrial time globe made up of twelve coloured printed paper gores, the equatorial strip graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days, showing the signs of the zodiac, the oceans with major currents, principle steamship routes with nautical miles, and an analemma shown, the continents outlined in green, marked with principle transcontinental railways, major rivers and mountain ranges, with stamped metal hour ring and brass meridian circle (unengraved), the globe axis located on opposing adjustable collets, geared to the time mechanism incorporating a silvered 24-hour drum dial, driven by clockwork contained in a 4in. (10.2cm.) diameter drum, signed R. Newey YORK fecit 1918, wound by a gear and crank handle, mounted on a tripod stand, the inswept feet on mahogany stretchers with three brass bun feet -- 25½in. (65cm.) high
