FITZ GLOBE Manufactured by GINN & HEATH
A rare 6-inch (15.2cm.) diameter terrestrial Instructional globe, the metal sphere pasted with twelve printed and coloured paper gores and northern polar calotte with hour ring engraved in Roman numerals, the countries delicately coloured showing rivers and certain geographical information, such as deserts, mountain ranges, the continent of India labelled HINDOOSTAN; Canada additionally labelled BRITISH AMERICA with further labelling for the areas of occupation of the Black Feet Indians and other tribes; the continent of Africa showing areas of the Ms of the Moon, Unexplored and Extensive Deserts so marked; Australia divided into New Holland and New South Wales; New Zealand labelled in Maori Eahei Nomauwe and Tavai Poenantoo for North and South Islands; the Antarctic continent only showing a portion of Enderbys Land and an area labelled Land Discovd by Capt. Wilkes of the U.S. Navy, further shown with a portion of Graham's Ld and the spot marked Capt. Weddell reached this point in 1823; the Sandwich Islands labelled as Sandwich Land; the globe unusually labelled with the following: Northern Limit of Wood, Northern Limit of Grain, Northern Limit of the Vine, Northern Limit of Bananas, Southern Limit of Bananas, Southern Limit of the Vine, Southern Limit of Grain and Southern Limit of Wood; the trade label pasted over a previous label, with Improved Analemma, (some paper discolouration and cracks to gores, and a few abrasions). The globe mounted on a steel axis over an iron horizontal plate arranged to rotate over the iron base decorated in red and gilt on a black ground, the [?] printed horizontal circle on the rotating horizontal plate missing, the stand with vertical pillar incorporating two pointers arranged to read against the equator, ecliptic and tropics by rotating the horizontal plate which in turn rotates the globe around its axis at 23½° (the angle of the ecliptic), the stand with a removable brass meridian part circle stamped 20°- 0°- 90°- 0°- 70°, with additional brass part circle on iron supports -- 9¼in. (23.5cm.) high
