Lot Essay

The original equestrian statue executed by Girardon and set up in the Place Louis-le -Grand, now Place Vendôme, Paris, in 1699, was destroyed in 1792 during the Revolution. A solitary fragment, the left foot of the king presently form part of the Louvre collection.
