Maker's mark of Peter and William Bateman, London, 1811.
Each on cylindrical socket with chased acanthus foliate border, the three-tiered open-work frame with gadrooned and pierced and engraved bands, with later pendant bells and foliage and floral festoons between, with acanthus and silver-gilt crown finials, marked on sockets and detachable upper and lower tiers--15in. (38cm.) high, 47.5oz. (2)

Lot Essay

A number of pieces of Judaica by the Bateman family are recorded, including a Sabbath lamp by Hester Bateman, London, 1781, formerly in the collection of Mrs. Charles Sebag-Montefiore, Christie's 1963. In the Portsmouth Synagogue there is a pair of rimmonim by the same, 1780, while at the Manchester Cheetham Hill Synagogue there is another pair by Peter, Ann and William Bateman, London, 1802.
