Cuzary, i.e. "The Book of Proofs and Argumentation for the aid of the neglected Religion" is a religio-philosophical work in the form of a Platonic dialogue between the King of the Khazars, a heathen, a Christian, a Mohamedan, and the Jewish scholar Jizchak Sangari. The book bases itself on the historical fact that the King of the Khazars and his Empire adopted Judaism (c. 740 a.d.). Jehuda Ha-Levi attempts here to trace the steps which led the monarch to the acceptance of his new faith. Cuzary has not only become a classic of Jewish apologetics, by its faithful and unbiased representation of Christianity and Islam, it also stands as a monument of Medieval Spanish religious tolerance.
Jacob Abendana translated Cuzary into Spanish as a reply to several conversion attempts by Christian scholars with whom he had frequent contacts. He dedicated his translation to the British merchant-diplomat Sir William Davidson. In 1681 Abendana became Haham of the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in London (which he had already visited in 1667-68). Here he completed his Spanish translation of the Mishnah, with the commentaries of Maimonides and Obadiah of Bertinoro.
