Published at a time when the Spanish Inquisition was still active, this standard work, by the great Spanish Christian Hebraist Rodriguez de Castro, is the first Spanish bibliography to reveal the wealth and importance of the literature by the Spanish Jews, full of notes, biographical accounts and bibliographical descriptions, many of them based upon direct examination, and therefore quite extensive. The second volume deals with Christian Spanish writers up to the end of the thirteenth century. The work is regarded as valuable for its references to manuscripts and unpublished books and poems. Rodriguez de Castro (1739-1795), appointed a royal librarian, had access to the rich store of literary treasures at the Escurial and dedicated his work, a Rabbinical Bibliography, which the Nation lacked, to the King of Spain -- AMADOR DE LOS RIOS, JOSE.
