HEBREW MANUSCRIPTS. Marriage Contracts. Four ketubbot from Ancona and Senigallia. The first: Thursday, 5 Sivan 5583 (15 May 1823); 724 x 511 mm. Ink and paint on vellum. Groom: Joseph David Shabbetai, son of Solomon me-Perugia; Bride: Tova Rachel, daughter of Joseph Shabbetai Hazak. A ketubbah cut and framed in a manner characteristic of Ancona. In the arched upper section a crowned, beaded medallion encloses an illustration of the Judgement of Solomon, supported by two half-nude, winged female figures. Pasted on depictions of Rachel at the Well (right) and Joseph re-united with his brothers (left), relating to the names of the bridal couple, flank the text. Floral motifs, inscribed cartouches, and a frame with two doves adorn the borders. The second: 1768, ink and paint on vellum, has a floral border and tempietto-like architectural structure within its arched top. The third:1796, ink and paint on vellum, displaying a boldly-colored floral border with birds. The fourth: 1818, with floral border and two nude female figures holding a sicle (right) and a goblet (left) flanking the text. (4)
