HEBREW AND ENGLISH MANUSCRIPT -- AUSTRALIAN. Testimonial of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, addressed to "His Royal Highness Prince Alfred Ernest Albert Duke of Edinburgh K.G." In the document the members of the congregation welcome the Prince upon his arrival in Victoria, declare their allegiance to the Royal Family, and wish the Prince success and prosperity. Dated Melbourne, 26 November 1867; signed by the Minister, President, Treasurer, Secretary and other officials of the congregation (12 signatures). Ink, gold paint and colors on vellum, 685 x 515 mm. The text is set beneath an elaborate architectural facade, supported by four marble Corinthian columns. Two recumbent lions rest at the column's bases; the facade's arched upper section is topped by the Tablets of the Law, inscribed in Hebrew with abbreviations of the Ten Commandments, and further embellished with foliate swags, vases and other decorative elements.
